Boston College sits atop a hill just west of Boston in the city of Newton, Massachusetts. BC, as it is informally called, has an outstanding academic reputation, and an even better reputation for being an “all-around” college with strong academics, great athletics, and a vibrant social scene. These factors, along with its proximity to Boston, make it a fantastic place to go to school.
Freshman Dorms At Boston College
Freshman at BC are either placed on Newton Campus – a campus about two miles west of the main campus – or Upper Campus, which is at the western end of the main campus. Each has its advantages – and disadvantages. Freshman on Newton Campus have to either drive to the main campus or take a shuttle bus, which entails getting up even earlier for those 8:00 a.m. classes. However, the relative isolation of Newton campus helps freshmen there bond and form strong friendships since they’re together so much. Upper Campus freshmen have a much easier time getting to class, but the housing there is some of BC’s worst: it’s a concrete jungle of seventies architecture with old carpeting and tiny rooms.
Upperclassmen Housing at Boston College
Though sophomores at Boston College often get to live in shiny new buildings and juniors usually live off campus in Brighton, seniors are the ones who get to experience the pinnacle of housing at BC: the “Mods”. Built in the seventies, the Mods are modular housing – little two-story cottages with three bedrooms each – that were designed to be temporary. More than 30 years later, the Mods are still there, and are perhaps the most desirable dorms at BC because of their well-deserved partying reputation. Walk through the Mods on a Saturday night, and you’ll see alcohol-fueled revelry almost wherever you look. Since many BC alumni have fond memories of the Mods, they are perennially spared from redevelopment.
