I have lived in the Boston area for my whole life. Although I was closer to Cape Cod for the first few years, Boston has really resonated with me. To a kid, there is nothing like the excitement of the city. I can remember my first ride on the “T” with my sister and parents. We were going to the New England Home Show. Something that might be boring for most kids was an exciting adventure to me.

As I got older, we moved closer to the city, to a little suburban town that was only a quick half hour ride to reach the heart of Boston. School field trips were often held at the New England Aquarium, the Museum of Science, and the Freedom Trail. Boston is also not too far from Plymouth, where the pilgrims settled and where the first Thanksgiving was held. Yes, I’ve been there a few times too.

As I became a young adult, a whole new world opened for me as I spent just about every weekend dancing the night away in Boston nightclubs along Lansdowne Street and Boylston Street. From 80s to techno, there is a club for everyone. And boy are these clubs fun!

As I started having a family of my own, we’d plop the kids in the stroller and walk through Boston Common and over by the Reflection pool. We’d stop for lunch at the Cactus Club and showed the kids the life-size buffalo above the bar. A day walking around Quincy Market and Faneuil Hall is also fun for the kids and for the adults. With all the shopping, the great food, the street performers, and the people watching, this is one of my favorite spots in town.

Massachusetts has about 31,300 miles of highways and interstates, with the Massachusetts Turnpike being the longest interstate in the commonwealth at 136 miles. The Mass Pike runs from the New York state line to Logan International Airport. Route 95 passes through Boston and goes all the way to Florida. Of course, there are many other interstates, highways, and roads in and around Boston. It makes sense for Boston to provide public transportation within and around the city, making it easy for visitors and residents to get around without the use of cars. Parking is one thing that isn’t that great in Boston, so public transportation is favored over owning your own car.

The MBTA, or Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, operates the subway, ferries, and busses to take people around the Boston area. The Commuter Rail is a train system that takes travelers longer distances to suburban areas, including a trip straight down to Plymouth. Most people in Boston utilize the “T”, or the subway systems, which have routes that are designated by color. The Red line and the Green line are the most used subway routes.

At South Station Tunnel, people will find one of the major hubs of public transportation. It is the starting point, or ending point depending on the direction of your travel, for the Commuter Rail trains. But, this is also where Amtrak high speed trains can be boarded to go anywhere in the country. There are also two scenic railways, the Berkshire Scenic Railway and the Cape Code Central Railroad. And, as with any train station, there are freight trains too, with a total of 1,079 miles of freight trackage in all of Massachusetts.

Boston is not only a great place to visit and play, it is also a great place to live and work. With its rich history, fantastic shows, stunning ocean views, friendly locals and constant flow of activity, living and working in Boston is very appealing. Boston has a designated neighborhood, the Financial District, where many of the most famous banks and investment professionals have set up office. Business in the area include the world headquarters for State Street Bank and Eastern Bank, as well as offices for Fidelity Investments, PricewaterhouseCoopers, The Debt Exchange, Putnam Investments, Bank of America, Hilton Hotel, Merrill Lynch, and The Federal Reserve Bank of Boston.

The buildings in the financial district are packed closer together than in other areas in Boston, like Back Bay, even though Back Bay is where Boston’s two largest buildings are located, the Prudential Center and the John Hancock Tower. This makes it rather easy to spot the financial district, even though it doesn’t have any specific boundaries. The majority of the buildings in the Financial District are around 500 feet tall and most of them have more than 40 stories.

As you move into the city, there are tons of retail stores, boutiques, restaurants, cafes, and department stores. Just take a look at the Prudential Center, with over 75 stores and restaurants in one place, people can live and work on the same street. There is a business for everyone in Boston, and great public transportation to take them from home, to work, to play without having to pay a fortune.

The Charles Playhouse is home to the Blue Man Group. It was originally the Fifth Universalist Church, built in 1839 before becoming the first synagogue in Boston in 1864. The Colonial Theatre was built in 1900 and is the oldest continuously operating theatre in Boston. This venue is great for both dramatic and musical productions. The Wilbur Theatre opened in 1914 and has seem performances of many landmark productions before becoming the new home to the Comedy Connection, formerly located in Quincy Market. Both musical and comedy talent perform here.

Boston is a city rich in culture, where many parades, festivals, and special events are celebrated throughout the year to commemorate the various ethnicities and religions of the city.

Parades
There are a few different parades throughout the year in Boston, of all sizes. In February, Boston celebrates the Chinese New Year with a huge parade with dancers and performers providing entertainment on several Boston streets. In March, the South Boston St. Patrick’s Day parade takes place, which is the second largest parade in the country. In April, there is a Greek Parade, in May there is a Haitian parade, and in October, there is the Roslindale parade.

Festivals
Bostonians take pride in the culture and ethnicity with feasts and festivals. In the summer months, there is some sort of feast or festival going on just about every weekend. There are too many to list, but the bigger festivals are religious ones, though anyone is welcome, no matter what your religion is. In June, come see the Santa Maria DiAnzano Procession, the Scooper Bowl, and the Annual Dragon Boat Festival. In July, there is the Cape Verdean Festival, Madonna Del Grazie Procession, Festival Betances, St. Rocco Procession, Saint Joseph Feast, and the Saint Agrippina Feast. In August, check out the Fest of Madonna della Cava, August Moon Festival, Feast of Madonna del Soccorso, kiddie Carnival, Saint Anthony’s Feast, and Saint Lucy Procession. In September, there is the Boston Art’s Festival, Saint Rosalie Procession, and Caliente: a Celebration of Latin Music. Harpoon Oktoberfest takes place in October. Races
Boston is home to the Boston Marathon, which takes place in April on Patriot’s Day and is one of the most prestigious sporting events in the world. In May, Boston hosts the 21-mile Walk for Hunger. June is the time when the Annual AIDS 10K walk or 5K run is held and the Heart Break Hill 5k. In October, there is the Annual Tufts Health Plan 10k for women and the Boston Light the Night 3k walk.

Boston is the capital city of Massachusetts, and the largest city in Massachusetts. Boston is also one of the oldest cities in the United States. Several Native American archaeological sites were excavated in Boston, revealing that the area was inhabited as early as 5000 BC. In 2009, the estimated population was 645,169, which makes it the 20th largest city in America.

In 1630, 10 years after the Pilgrims founding Plymouth Colony, Puritans from England came to the Shawmut Peninsula and founded Boston. These two groups also had different religious practices and are historically distinct. These two colonies were united by the formation of the Province of Massachusetts Bay in 1691.

In the 1770’s Britain tried to control the 13 colonies by taxing just about everything that came into the city. The colonists had enough and started revolting to become separate from England, which led to the Boston Massacre, the Boston Tea Party, and soon after, the American Revolution. The battle of Lexington and Concord, the Battle of Bunker Hill, and the Siege of Boston are all Revolutionary War battles that occurred in and around Boston. This is when Paul Revere made his famous ride at midnight through the city to warn the people of the British Red Coats.

After the Revolutionary war, Boston became a very important manufacturing center and shipping port. The city as a whole expanded beyond the Shawmut Peninsula through municipal annexation and land reclamation. Marshes were filled in, mud flats were filled in, and gaps between wharves on the waterfront will filled in and Boston tripled it’s size between 1631 and 1890.

Boston was first called Trimountaine, but was later renamed after Boston, Lincolnshire, England, the home of several prominent colonists. On March 4, 1822, the official name of Boston changed from “the Town of Boston”, to “the City of Boston”.

Many historical landmarks in Boston, mostly from the American Revolution, can be found by walking the Freedom Trail. The Freedom Trail is marked by a line of red bricks embedded in the ground. Visitors can walk the trail themselves, or take a guided tour.

Bostonians love sports and it is clearly visible as you walk down any street in Boston and see people wearing Boston sport team apparel, signs, and billboards of the beloved sports teams in Massachusetts. The most popular sports teams in Massachusetts are the New England Patriots football team, The Boston Red Sox baseball team, and the Celtics basketball team. The Boston Celtics basketball team was founded in 1946 and plays their home games at the TD Garden. The Celtics have won 17 National Basketball Association Championships, which is the most for any NBA franchise. Big basketball stars that were on, or are on the Celtics include Larry Bird, Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, Dave Cowens, Bill Russell, Reggie Lewis, Robert Parish, and Kevin McHale.

The New England Patriots, affectionately nicknamed the “Pats”, play at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts. Foxborough is 22 miles away from Boston. The Patriots are the second team in the National Football League to win three Super Bowls in four years, after the Dallas Cowboys. The Patriots have the longest winning streak of any football team, both regular season and playoff games, with a 21-game winning streak that ran from October 2003 – October 2004. In 2007, the Pats won their first 18 games, which was every single game that they played, until the Super Bowl, where they were defeated by the New York Giants.

When traveling within Boston, visitors will want to use the T. There are several different trains, named by colors. Most Boston attractions are accessible by the Red Line and Green Line trains. The Red Line is the main train route, and the Green line is probably the second most popular train route in Boston. Most people must take the Red Line first, to then get onto the Green Line.

When visiting Boston, jump on the Red Line to South Station and then get onto the Plymouth Commuter Rail to see more historical locations. An easy day trip would be to go to Plimoth Plantation and the Mayflower II. If you are coming to Boston for historical sites, a day in Plymouth is a must. Plimoth Plantation is a reenactment of the Pilgrim’s first settlement where actors are dressed in time period clothing. The actors speak like Pilgrims, are in Pilgrim houses, and doing Pilgrim tasks. Visitors can walk through the village and go into different Pilgrim homes and speak to the people. It’s like stepping back in time and seeing what it was like to live as a Pilgrim. Many times they are cooking authentic meals, providing wonderful smells, and sewing or candle making, or other similar crafts.

Boston also received recognition for the best city government website in the United States in September 2010. This award was also given by the Center for Digital Government. The city of Boston is the first city to hold the #1 website and the #1 digital city awards in the same year.

Mayor Menino is proud of his city and the fact that the Boston government is accessible to the city’s residents, businesses, and even visitors. He stated in his announcement speech that he is honored for these recognitions and is proud of the Department of Innovation and Technology, as well as the entire city of Boston.

The Center for Digital Government’s Director, Todd Sander, stated the winners of these awards demonstrate the transformative power of information technology and pointed out that the current state of the economy is causing people to rethink local government structures and strategies. It is becoming very clear that digital technology is critical in helping businesses and organizations maintain and improve service. The lighted-case hanging became a way of warning American revolutionists about possible dangers. The lighted-cases were not hung for more than a minute, lest the process caught the attention of the soldiers in the British Army. The lighted-case or lanterns stand testimony to the times that had passed by.

Along the freedom train in Boston’s National Historic Park is a landmark that speaks a lot about the history of Boston and also of America. The Freedom Trail is with so many landmarks, that each one has its own significance in the history of America and American Revolution.

 The Old State House is one building that was used by local governments as well as colonial rulers to have discussions. It also served as a merchant’s meeting point.

Tom Brady is hoping that the departure of Randy Moss won’t hamper his Super Bowl chances. It’s been a strange journey for Brady since his last trip to the Super Bowl. If you don’t remember the Super Bowl, then you might have been living under a rock. The last super bowl was in 2007 where he took his undefeated team into the game against a rag tag group of New York Giants. The only thing that was certain was the game would be hard fought but in the end the tough Giants defensive line is just a little too much for the Patriots pass protection and Brady went home a loser.

The next season was supposed to be about redemption but ended up becoming about rehabilitation. He tore his acl in the very first game of the season and while the Pats managed to climb to an impressive 11-5 record it wasn’t enough to crack the postseason in a tough AFC. This left Brady tasting the bitterness of defeat and hopelessness.

In 2009 Brady and company came back and found themselves in familiar territory, winning the AFC East and heading into the playoffs hoping to make that push but they were met by a tough Ravens team who took the wind out of their sails really quickly and put on a football clinic to the one time super bowl dynasty.

This year hopes to be different. The personnel is different as Brady is throwing to old targets like Deion Branch and they are working with a revamped defense. There are questions how well the defense will hold up in January but if all things go according to plan the Patriots will be a tough out when it matter the most and for that alone you must give Brady a ton of the credit.

Boston is a city of endlessly excellent architecture. While it is not quite the same as the Mediterranean holidays you can find on the other side of the Atlantic, you do have a whole lot of history to explore. For instance, there is the statue of Mary Dyer, who was executed in Boston Common and became the last martyr in America. But believe it or not, a large number of the buildings in Boston date from after 1760, when the largest recorded earthquake in the history of New England occurred there. That’s one way to push urban renewal.

Because there were so many early battles in the Revolutionary War fought in and near there, Boston is often referred to as the Cradle of Liberty. While the streets and some of the buildings may be as old as some in Europe, this is the place where Europe and the United States of America parted ways in a slight but meaningful way. Maybe we just got sick of drinking tea all the time. The only way you are sure to find out is if you go and check out the place. They even have a Freedom Trail.

But maybe the history of warfare isn’t quite your thing. The history doesn’t end with peace. For a hundred years, Boston was among the wealthiest trading and production cities in the world. And since that time, though the world has changed, fortune favors the well prepared. And considering that Boston has plenty of cultural tours to boast about, and is even in the bidding process for the World Cup in 2018 and 2022 (might as well try for both), they are definitely the type of city that prepares. If you come to Boston during this natural “gold rush” you will not regret it. The colors displayed by the abundant, lush foliage found in Boston and all over New England is breath taking and totally unforgettable.

Although a bit different from many tourist or visitor sites, one of the best places to see fantastic fall color is the Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge. This is one of the first garden cemeteries. It has 5,000 trees from 630 different species located on many ponds, hills and dells which provide for great vantage points for viewing and photographing. It is definitely a superior autumn spot.

Another great place in the fall for obvious reasons is the Arnold Arboretum located in Boston’s Emerald Necklace. During the 1800′s a series of parks and gardens were formed around the outer bounds of Boston. This arboretum covers 265 acres and has 5,000 species of trees. On the last Sunday in October, the Boston Fall Foliage Festival is hosted here and offers storytelling, music, leaf crafts, apples and cider all free of admission charges.

One way to view these and other fantastic foliage features of Boston is by bicycle. Boston traffic leaves one with some trepidation and to ride a bike through it might be nigh unto terror unless following an experienced guide. Asian longhorn beetles have made a nuisance of themselves in the United States since 1996, when they were discovered in Brooklyn, New York. The beetles burrow inside trees, where they lay their eggs. When the eggs hatch, the young beetles chew their ways out. An infested tree will certainly die. There is nothing that can save them once eggs have been laid.

Recently, six cases of infestation were found in Boston. All of them were on the grounds of Faulkner Hospital. The beetles have also been detected in Chicago, Ontario, Worcester, NY. In order to determine whether the beetles come from the same place, scientists must study a genetic analysis of the samples.

After sending samples from the Boston infestations, scientists have concluded that they cannot determine whether these beetles are connected to those in other cities. This casts a significant amount of doubt about where the beetles came from. If the Boston and Worcester beetles had definitely come from the same group, then the U.S. Department of Agriculture and other agencies would information that could help them determine how the beetles migrated to Boston. Since the results are inconclusive, though, it is anyone’s guess how the beetles made their way to Faulkner Hospital.

The infested trees at Faulkner Hospital were all planted between 2000 and 2001. After investigating more than 7,800 trees in the area, researchers could only find six infected trees.

This could be good news for Boston’s trees. If the extermination project successful found all of the infected trees, then the destruction could stop before it ever really began. If there are other infected trees in the area, though, then the eggs will likely hatch, creating more adult beetles to wreak havoc in Massachusetts.

Of course, it is also possible that the problem could continue even if the extermination program has eliminated the current threat. This is one of the problems surrounding uncertainty of the beetles’ origins. Without knowing where they came from, it is impossible to know whether or not more will enter the area.

Autumn in Boston

Of all the places in the United States, New England is the most enchanting place to visit during the fall. Boston’s Awesome Autumn Hues

Thick, lush deciduous foliage in Boston makes it a spectacular place to visit from late September through the first part of November. The peak of color generally comes from the second and third week of October. The actual time of turning depends on the specific species of plant. New England on the whole is so rich in foliage, however, that anytime you come during these three months you’re bound to enjoy splendid golds, crimsons and oranges with a backdrop of gorgeous vibrant greens.

Bus tours are offered by many companies all over New England, many leaving from Boston. You don’t have to leave Boston though to be able to enjoy the true beauty of the fall. One of Boston’s newer garden areas is the Rose Kennedy Greenway. The plants are newer but offer brilliant color as they change come September and October. The Back Bay Fens is one of these areas. The Back Bay Fens is one of these areas. Through the Fens flows the tranquil Muddy River. It waters the numerous shrubs and trees found here. Located here also are the famous Victory Gardens and the Kelleher Rose Garden. On the way here along Agassiz Road you’ll find an old arched bridge from which the view is magnificent.

Worldwide First to be Seen Near Boston

There are many fine collections and exhibitions of fine art in and around Boston, but one of the most noteworthy in the news lately is one which will open on September 14th of this year, 2010. The first viewing of 90 objects from the Forbidden City will open at the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts. Yes, Salem is famous for more than just witches! The museum’s curator of Chinese art, Nancy Berliner, was a key player in the exhibition of a Chinese merchant house called Vin Vu Tang, in 2009. Officials involved with this project were so impressed with Nancy Berliner’s work that they brought her on board to work with the Qianlong garden complex project.

The garden complex has 27 buildings, only one of which has yet been restored, that have never been open to nor seen by the public even though seven million tourists throng the Forbidden City annually. The 90 objects being brought over are being dissembled and boxed up in Beijing and transported directly to Salem for reconstruction and exhibition. It is very rare indeed for China to send objects out of the country, let alone those which have never been seen by their own people.

The objects include murals, paintings, ornate furniture and jade pieces from the Emperor’s private garden. They constitute some of the artisans of the time finest works but have never been seen before. The show known as “Emperor’s Private Paradise: Treasures from the Forbidden City” is made possible by partnership of the Palace Museum, Beijing, the World Monument Fund and the Peabody Essex Museum. The show will be from September 14, 2010 through January 9,2011 at which time it will move to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, New York so whether in Boston or New York be sure not to miss this once in a lifetime experience!

Art in Boston

Much of what is known of Boston has to do with the Colonial and Revolutionary War eras. Many of the sites around Boston which attract tourists have to do with this rich history. However, there are those who are in need of a different type of venue. A type which can span even greater realms of time, art. In Boston are multiple galleries and museums where one can view art if several forms and from varied regions of the earth.

At the McMullen Museum, located in Boston College, the display known as “Asian Journeys” can be seen. The Rockefellers have allowed this to be on display and the works include pieces dating from 600 BCE to the 19th century.

The South Boston / Halifax County Museum was founded on July 11,1982 and housed in a rented house, it moved several times finally opening its doors again on December 7, 1997 at Wilborn Avenue. This museum houses antiques, art works, books, and actual physical items of historical importance to Halifax County.

The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum was founded in 1903 and is like walking into a Venetian palace. It houses works of several famous artists including Rembrandt. Nine of these pieces are no longer housed there as they were stolen in 1990 and never recovered. The heist remains unsolved to this day. This site also has some magnificent gardens to be enjoyed by its visitors.

The Museum of Fine Art in Boston was founded in 1876 and houses 450,000 pieces of art for viewing. A new addition is in progress made possible by a $1.5 million grant from the Kresge foundation. This grant makes possible 4 new learning galleries, 2 classrooms, a seminar room and a new 150 seat auditorium for the performing arts.

For more contemporary viewing, the Institute of Contemporary Art which was founded in 1936 moved to its new building in 2006. The new building was the vision of the architect team Diller Scofidio + Renfro and is the first art museum built in Boston since 1906.

Another company, Super Duck Tours, has amphibious buses. You just might think you’ve stepped into the Magic School Bus with Ms. Frizzle as the bus takes off right into Boston Harbor as part of your tour. It holds 49 people and tours Boston’s historical sites and then off into the water for a great view from there, just like in colonial ships!

With either company the guides are witty and very knowledgeable about Boston’s rich history as well as little known trivia which makes the tour fun and entertaining as well as educational. Starting out on April 20, 1912 Fenway Park began its baseball history. The first game played was against the New York Highlanders (later the Yankees). The game was witnessed by 27,000 fans and would have made front page news if it hadn’t been trumped by the sinking of the Titanic only a few days previous.

The original home of the “Pilgrims” who became the Red Sox was Huntington Avenue Grounds but the owner got tired of rental agreements and decided to build a new stadium for his Red Sox team. The new stadium was named after the area in which it was built being the Fenway area of Boston. Baseball greats such as Babe Ruth and Ted Williams called this park home.

Today’s Red Sox team continually recognizes its responsibility and opportunity to influence and give back to the community. They give to over 4500 organizations annually.

The other sports great in Boston is the Boston Celtics. Well known since November 14, 1928 the team and their original home, Boston Garden, became legend in basketball history and lore. The famous parquet floor from Boston Garden gave rise to many of the legendary tales. It was to have spawned the luck as the players claimed to know which way the ball would bounce from any given place on the floor. This gave them a huge advantage over visiting teams, leading to their record breaking home game winning streaks. The famous floor was actually taken up and moved to the new building until it became too old to play on when it was broken up and sold as souvenirs.

As you take this 45 minute cruise through Boston Harbor you will also be able to see the Boston Tea Party boat and whether by land or by sea you can view the Old North Church.

If you go by land, stop and stay awhile at one of the sites that became world famous as the place to signal Paul Revere the night of his mid-night ride. You’ll see why this was the most strategic place for the signal to be given regardless of its (at the time) over-whelming Loyalist congregation. Many of the more affluent British faithfuls belonged to that congregation including the mayor of Massachusetts. This made the fact that the Reverend of the Old North Church was a patriot even more amazing. The Old North Church has the oldest church bells in North America and is still in service today to a thriving Episcopal congregation.

Revolutionary Boston

Almost without exception when Americans think of the Revolutionary War they immediately think of Boston, Massachusetts. And why not? That is where it all started. Getting back to the Revolution and your cruise, you will be able to see from the harbor the Beacon Hill monument and the infamous, Old North Church. This is the place where Reverend Robert Newman proved faithful to the Patriot cause by hanging the two lanterns which alerted Paul Revere to the advancing British army up the Charles river.

When you finish your cruise of the harbor, why not follow the regulars up the river with the Charles Riverboat Cruise and see Cambridge. This river is one of the most breathtakingly beautiful rivers in America. You will be able to see many other sites important to the Patriots as well as those important to us today such as Harvard, MIT
and the Esplanade. If you want to start out in the morning, the first cruise of the day goes through the river locks and into Boston Harbor. You could spend the whole morning in extraordinary maritime Boston.

When you have your land legs back, wander up to Boston’s North End to see the oldest building in downtown Boston, the Paul Revere House. It was one of the first house museums to open in the United States when it opened in April of 1908.

Boston Bounty

When you leave Salem you just might be ready for a slight change of pace, like the 1627 English village in Plimouth Plantation. Here you will be able to experience what it may have been like to be one of the first Americans with the pilgrims and the Native Wampanoag Indians. Live actors in period dress introduce you to life on the plantation for early colonists. You will be able to see some of the almost lost crafts in the Craft Center that kept the pilgrims alive so long ago. Docked at the State pier is the Mayflower II in Plymouth Harbor, completing the full pilgrim type experience.

Ready for more modern times, how about the 1830′s? You can head just north of Boston a bit and visit Old Sturbridge Village. Whether in spring with new baby animals, summer’s Independence Day celebration, fall with brilliant foliage, or Christmas by candlelight, you will love it here. You can shop at the country store, try your hand at blacksmithing or stroll through the heirloom gardens. Whatever appeals to you, you can find it here in this more “modern” New England village.

Exploring Intellectual Boston

The Harvard Museum of Natural History has multiple displays of pre-historic skeletons and whole creatures. You can see one of only four almost complete skeleton of a Triceratops. You can also see the only Kronosaurus to be displayed. What is a Kronosaurus? It is a marine reptile that measures 42 feet long! At this museum you will also see the one of a kind display of glass flowers and plants. The over 3000 intricate specimens were made by a father-son team to use in teaching botany. Also to be on display through 2011 is the exquisite display of the evolution of color in birds and animals. A fantastic exhibit!

As you leave the Natural History Museum you can step into the present world at the Museum of Science, Boston where they have hundreds of hands=on activities for the whole family. The Human Body Connection is a favorite and shows as well as explains the workings of the human body in understandable ways. You can walk on the Soundstairs to get to the Discovery Center for the young children and their families or go to the IMAX Dome screen for some sit=down enjoyment. The Theater of Electricity will keep you on the edge of your seat or try the 3-D Cinema for an all around good time.

Head into the future as you go to the MIT Museum. You will enjoy seeing robots in action as well as see displays on what is being researched at MIT currently. There is an amazing holography exhibit that fascinates the eye and a “Robots and Beyond” exhibit to really take your brain places. You can even meet ‘n’ greet a sociable robot!

Whether in Boston visiting friends or having moved there, many victims of hurricane Katrina chose to live in Boston–the northeast tourism capital. We recently passed the fifth anniversary of the American tragedy that was Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Life long residents of the New Orleans region are still displaced, living in shelters or government-funded temporary housing. Certainly, a lot of progress has been made – and the fifth anniversary shone a bright light on all the good deeds and charity that has been extended to the Gulf region – but there is a lot of hard work left to do if we want to restore what once was one of our country’s biggest, most beautiful tourist attractions. Among the rubble of Hurricane Katrina, thousands of pets were displaced or abandoned by their owners out of necessity. Fortunately, many of those animals were adopted directly from the ruins, or shortly thereafter from surrounding shelters. Pet insurance was a blessing for many of the people who adopted them.

Adjacent to it is the famous lake which affords spectacular photography, especially with the famous colors of New England’s autumn. To be enjoyed on the lake are the well known Swan Boats. These unique, bicycle powered boats are available to take you around the lake for a water front tour of the garden. Another lesser known monument is found here in the Public Garden, it is dedicated to the discovery and first use of ether as anesthesia in 1846. It is appropriately called the Ether statue.

Unlike the honored ether, the statues of the duck family (mother and ducklings) which are found in the garden as well, won’t put you to sleep. They were placed in the park to honor Boston’s place in the children’s book “Make Way for Ducklings.” Be sure to make way for them, especially if you have little ones, kids really love them and they make for terrific photo shoots!

First Time to see Boston?

So much to see and do, where do I start? It is a common question for tourists coming to “Beantown.” Hopefully this will help shed some light on the subject. The first thing usually suggested by the locals is the Freedom Trail. It is a sequence of historic sites which played a significant part in the Revolutionary War. It is easy to follow as a red line is painted in the sidewalk and you just have to follow the line. It is suggested that you start out at the visitor center of the National Historic Park. Here they provide pamphlets which will explain a little more about what you will see as well as get you started off in the right direction.

Another great place to see is Faneuil Hall Market. This is also known as Quincy Market (same place). This unique shopping experience is quaint and fun and you really might find some good deals. Another shopping haven is Newbury Street. Here you will find eight blocks of shops of all types. What is called The North End is a fun step into European style American living. You might think you have found yourself in Italy again to hear some of the conversations here or sample the food. Beacon Hill is another place full of history and intrigue. Besides the historical past, the bar that inspired the TV show “Cheers” is located here. The Boston Public Garden always draws a following as it is the oldest one in the United States. It has the Swan Boats and is part of the famous Duck Tours.

Crossing the Charles River will bring you to Harvard Square or Cambridge. Here you can try your hand on the river or visit the intellectuals at Harvard University. In Harvard Square you can find numerous bookstores and the Chessmaster! A little ways into Cambridge you can also find Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s home. You can also take a cruise from here (mornings only) that will take you through the locks out to Boston Harbor to see the sites from the waterfront. Great thing if the timing works for you.

Living in Boston can get expensive. Some people are fortunate enough to never have to take out loans for anything while visiting or living in Boston, but most people, as they accrue educational and health-related expenses, need to rely on help from the bank and other crediting institutions to get help sharing life’s financial burdens.

What’s News in Boston?

What kind of things are in the news in one of the nation’s metropolitan areas? Snakes, bedbugs, bad guys and even a bogus bridal show!

Like most of the country, Boston is headed off for the elections with the governor’s race. Mostly between the present governor, Deval Patrick and the republican candidate Charlie Baker. However, a third, Tim Cahill, appears to pose some threat.

More speaking out for not speaking is happening when a father goes to join the convention on safer driving laws. He lost a son in 2007 while the two were chatting on the cell phone. Dad feels stricter laws should be enacted to protect more people. Also in 2007, a 15 year old was killed by another teen, 16, who is now appealing his life sentence for a lesser second degree charge due to being mentally unstable at the time of the incident. The appeal has been denied.

A woman in Cambridge awoke to an unexpected surprise as she found a 4 foot long Colombian Red Tail Boa in her bedroom. She had left her window open which the snake used to escape the cold Cambridge weather that the one to one and a half year old snake may not have withstood much longer. Speaking of things in the bedroom, have you checked for bed bugs lately? Apparently they are on the rise! Many even higher class hotels/motels are finding these imposing creatures.

Another top story in the news of Boston is of another 15 year old who committed suicide after allegedly being bullied by several other classmates. Bullying seems to be as bad an epidemic as bed bugs! Can you spray for bullies? Last but not least is the bogus bridal show. A woman was apprehended after collecting fees for a fake bridal show that was supposed to be held in Boston. She had a helper who has not been located as yet. This is not the first time for her however, she has done the same thing in Texas, Nevada, Ohio, Florida and Maryland. Way to go Boston for bamboozling the bamboozler!

A revolution is sweeping through the fashion industry. Many clothing items are manufactured overseas where costs and wages are lower, and the items are then wildly marked up to increase profits. Toms Shoes, based in Santa Monica, California, is challenging that business model.

The founder of Tom’s Shoes is Blake Mycoskie, an entrepreneur from Texas. After visiting Argentina and seeing how many families couldn’t afford shoes for their children, he decided to start a shoe company. He began selling shoes, based on the Catalan Alpargata design, out of his home. He put a rubber sole on the shoe and made them with bright colors.

To promote his company and the welfare of the children of Argentina, he promised to give away one pair of shoes for each pair he sold. Many business leaders scoffed at his unique idea. Today, Tom’s Shoes has given away over 600,000 pairs of shoes and is giving 100,000 shoes to Haitians as part of the earthquake relief.

Tom’s Shoes are manufactured in Argentina, China, and Ethiopia, and the company requires each factory to sign an agreement to pay fair wages and to follow local labor standards. The company that is giving away shoes does not allow its products to be made made under slave-labor conditions, and it regularly sends representatives to check on the status of the working conditions.

Two stores within six miles of Boston carry Tom’s shoes: Berks at 50 JFK Street in Cambridge, and Newbury Comics/Hootenanny at 36 JFK Street in Cambridge. Tom’s Shoes are also available in stores across the United States. The company has surprised the leaders of industry who thought that selling and giving couldn’t be mixed. The combination of humanitarianism and profit has paid off, to the chagrin of the investors who passed up the opportunity to support  Mycoskie’s dream.

A group of graduate students at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston has developed a special kind of fiber that could have helpful applications in the future. The fiber is designed to pick up and transmit sounds, much like a microphone.

This might sound like something straight out of a science fiction story, but the group is already working on applications that will benefit people in the future. Yes, the fiber has plenty of novel applications. You could, for instance, build a tie that records meetings. It also has many practical applications, especially in the medical industry.

Hospital gowns made of thread could monitor patient health by focusing on sounds. Perhaps one day the technology will become so good that patients will no longer need to wear sensors on their bodies. They’ll just put on their gowns and rest.

The Boston-based group made the thread out of plastic materials. Adjusting the fluorine content in the plastic threads allowed them to become piezoelectric, which means they can generate electricity through pressure, essentially making them self-powered. The group then added a plastic designed with a high graphite content that holds its shape and conducts easily. After introducing electricity to the thread to realign their molecules, they are ready to transmit and detect sound frequencies.

Understanding the procedure is complicated after it has already been discovered is hard enough for most laymen. Imagine developing the idea from the ground up.

According to researchers working with the group, the thread is not ready for practical applications. The current success, however, means that they are a big step closer. If you were to pick up one of the threads and hold it to your ear, you could make the thread vibrate with an audio frequency that you could actually hear.

Of course, getting a single thread to vibrate is something entirely different from getting an entire garment to vibrate. With enough work, however, MIT’s group could discover a way to create garments that detect sound at specific parts of the body. That way they could monitor different organs without using troublesome sensors.

A research team at Boston University has released a study indicating that heart health could influence brain health. The researchers studied 1,500 people, giving it a good scope on the general population. Not all of the people included in the study had heart disease. Including sick and healthy individuals allowed the scientists to compare and contrast the hearts and brains of each group.

One of the most surprising findings from the study is that individuals with low cardiac indexes tent to have small brain volume. Approximately 30 percent of the individuals studied had low cardiac indexes. It is uncertain exactly what this relationship means. It’s also unsure that low brain volume necessarily causes significant problems. The high percentage of people who had low cardiac indexes and brain volumes, however, makes it important for future studies to focus on whether these factors have an impact on general health.

There is also the possibility that scientists in the future can use this information to help them detect heart disease early in life. Treating heart disease is much easier when it is discovered in its early stages. It becomes more difficult to treat with age. If doctors could use brain size as an early sign of heart disease, then it might be possible to begin treatments before patients notice any symptoms.

The findings also show how important it is to focus on heart health. Keeping the heart in good shape could help keep the brain in good shape. It is possible that cardiovascular exercise, therefore, could improve brain function and even help prevent certain brain diseases, such as Alzheimer’s.

Unfortunately, the results could also mean that the U.S. is headed down a bad path. With obesity on the rise and more people living sedentary lifestyles, it is very possible that the future’s not looking so bright for some people. On the positive side, though, identify the link between heart health and brain health could encourage people to get more active. It’s one thing to get larger as one ages, and quite another thing to lose brain function.

For the next three months, Winthrop residents will have an easier time commuting to Boston. That’s because a new ferry between Winthrop and Boston opened August 3. It will continue to run for the next three months, at which time the city will decide whether to continue the service. Winthrop’s town leaders hope that the three-month trial will lead to a success so that they can continue operating the ferry next year on a permanent basis.

Winthrop’s mayor, James McKenna, hopes that the ferry will make it easier for the town’s residents to commute into Boston, but he also hopes that the ferry will entice Bostonians to visit the small town just to their east.

Currently, Winthrop’s city leaders are working on a harbor walk project in a part of the city called Crystal Cove. The Harbor Walk will include restaurants, shops, and numerous sightseeing opportunities that will attract people from the Boston metro area. If your not too interested in the Boston area you could try Florida, which has the greatest outdoor activities for all ages year round. Florida vacation homes are the perfect place to go and try the pirate cruise, parasailing, water parks, and even the zoo.

The Crystal Cove harbor walk’s success, however, depends somewhat on the success of the ferry. After all, there are plenty of things to do in Boston without traveling to Winthrop. Sure, it’s a relatively short drive, but one that few Bostonians will make regularly. The ferry, however, will make it easier for people on both sides of Boston Harbor to travel. Even those who don’t find that the ferry saves them a substantial amount of time could still enjoy the novelty of the experience.

Winthrop has a lot riding on the ferry and Crystal Cove concepts. The planned harbor walk project will cost about $2.35 million.

It could be difficult to get the project up and running, however. This is largely because the Crystal Cove project relies somewhat on the success of the 149-passenger ferry. The ferry’s success, however, depends on a good reason to visit Winthrop. Seeing as how the city does not plan to begin its harbor walk project until next year, the ferry could struggle during its three-month trial.

Boston has long been an important location to the hacker community. The presence of a strong computer tech industry, MIT, and the near-by Harvard means that there are plenty of tech-savvy people living in Boston. Many of those people started their careers by getting interested in computer hacking.

To most of us, hackers are dangerous. They steal information, write viruses, and create all kinds of havoc. Within the hacker community, however, you will find various types of people who have their own ethical codes. Many of them simply enjoy solving complicated puzzles, while others take apart security systems in order to discover weaknesses. Knowing where the weaknesses are is just the first step. Deciding what to do with that information is where the ethics come in. Some hackers use their skills to steal information, but the vast majority of hackers use them to alert companies to potential security flaws.

Boston first became popular as a hacker town during the 1990s when a group calling themselves Lopht Heavy Industries started publishing security flaws related to major computer software such as the Windows operating system.

Some people question whether such tactics do more harm than good. The hacker community, however, maintains that censorship has no place in modern society.

It’s not surprising, therefore, that the recent WikiLeaks scandal has many authorities eyeing elite computer hackers in the Boston area. The big question is whether someone helped Bradley Manning, the young Army Private who initially leaked documents about the War in Afghanistan.

Leaking thousands of documents would require a certain level of expertise. Imagine downloading more than 90,000 documents from a database without drawing attention to the activity. That’s quite an accomplishment. Chances are that Bradley does not have the skills to do it by himself.

According to computer experts and hackers in the Boston area, there are other hurdles that Bradley would have to jump to sneak the files out. First, he would need help downloading all of those files from the Pentagon’s server. Second, he would need to know how to scrub them of metadata. It’s more complicated than laymen know.

Boston is the quintessential New England city – it draws in millions of people for financial, cultural and social functions, and it has the kind of weather that could only be described as “predictably unpredictable.” After all, there are not too many cities in New England that do not experience plenty of temperature changes throughout the year, ranging from “bone chilling cold” to “almost hot enough to cook eggs on the side walk.” And with enough rain to nearly qualify for rain forest status (minus the forest, of course), Boston is the kind of city where a person might want to take up a little bit of shade.

Granted, the weather is often beautiful. And if you are one of the sufficiently lucky (and affluent) people who have access to a good view of the Charles River, you can attest to that being only one of the numerous sites around town that you could just sit and take in for hours at a time. Unfortunately, the weather has a disturbing tendency to conspire with itself (and your schedule) to make any time where you could just set up a lawn chair and take in the sites a bad time from a weather perspective. When the Puritans arrived, they probably considered the challenging climate to be a test from the Almighty.

Aren’t you glad that in our modern world, we’ve largely passed that test? Nowadays, gazebos allow you to sit outside without actually having to take the brunt of the outside’s hatred for human beings who want to sit around and relax. You can sit inside your gazebo, all bundled up and enjoying the majesty of the snow fall, without having to feel the full brunt of those arctic winds Ben Franklin was talking about. And in the summer time, you can enjoy a calm afternoon, rain or shine. Rain means very little in your gazebo.

Boston, Massachusetts is one of the most popular tourist destinations on the east coast, and for good reason. A veritable feast of historical attractions awaits American History enthusiasts, from Paul Revere’s house to the oldest public park in the United States. There are also museums, plenty of high-end as well as knickknack and gift shopping, old American cemeteries, and delicious dining from five star restaurants to street vendors. Whatever you’re looking for in Boston, there is a weekend itinerary that will be perfect for you. The following are some suggestions for things to do within the Boston area that should be especially appealing to outdoorsy folks.

How about an introduction to Boston by kayak? Take a sightseeing tour on the Charles River and float your way past some of the city’s best spots. On Friday nights, there are paddle tours that leave from Cambridge in the evening that are about two hours long. Book in advance and let the experienced guides take you past scenic landscapes and Bostonian landmarks. You’ll finish the night with a barbecued meal.

Fenway Park, famous home of the Boston Red Sox, is worth a visit even if you can’t score tickets to a game. Tours of the longest running actively operating ballpark in America are reasonably priced, and some tours come with field access and even batting practice privileges so you can pretend you’re a pro. If you want to sail away, why not sail out to the Boston Harbor Islands? About ten minutes from downtown Boston, you can check out the islands by boarding a ferry or joining a boat tour. Get close to nature and soak up some American history with a visit to these islands.

Another great outside attraction is the Boston Public Garden. Don’t miss out on the chance to meander the pathways and people watch on weekends when the weather is nice and locals come out to job or stroll. You can even ride the iconic swan boats, a pastime that is a tradition in the Boston Common lake, and great fun for younger kids and adults alike.

Far from the “Slummerville” moniker given to it in the old days, the city of Somerville is a thriving, eclectic urban area right next to Cambridge and just north of Boston and the Charles River. Somerville has become a desirable place to live for many Bostonians for several reasons.

Somerville Dining and Nightlife

Somerville has some of Boston’s most interesting restaurants and bars. Since there is a large Portugese population, Somerville has many Portugese and Brazilian restaurants, shops, and bakeries. Walk down Cambridge Street in the morning, and you’ll see groups of Portugese men standing outside the bakeries, drinking coffee and joking around. For beer lovers, Somerville’s Inman Square and Union Squares offer pubs like The Druid and Bukowski’s – each with a wide selection of craft beer. Inman Square also has one of Boston’s best ice cream shops – Christina’s – with exotic flavors like chocolate chili, rose, and ginger. For a more refined dining experience, Oleana – a restaurant in Inman Square – is one of Boston’s very best restaurants, especially for vegetarian diners. Try the Baked Alaska for dessert – a towering creation served toasty-hot.

Intellectual Climate

Since Boston boasts so many colleges and universities, the population is, as a whole, quite educated, and this is reflected in much of Somerville’s culture. Cambridge, a technology haven, is just next door, and some of the world’s leading biotech companies are based there. Both Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology are located in Cambridge, and many of the students live and hang out in Somerville. Also, Tufts University, another highly regarded school, is located next to Somerville’s Davis Square. The intellectual density has helped support creativity and innovation throughout Somerville, and it helps to keep the economy growing. It’s a great place for entrepreneurs, since they don’t have to look too far to find talent.

There are plenty of wonderful sites to see in Boston for tourists looking for things to do. Among the historical sites and national parks, there are fabulous places such as the Black Heritage Trail and the Freedom Trail. The Boston Black Heritage Trail is a route with interactive exhibits, linking more than a dozen pre-Civil War places, like the Museum of African American History. Other sites of interest in Boston consist of museums and aquariums or zoos. The Boston Athenaeum is one of the oldest libraries in America, founded in 1804 by Boston’s Anthology Club. The Boston Tea Party Museum is also a fascinating museum, which has within it a full-scale replica of one of the ships involved in the Boston Tea Party. The Franklin Park Zoo is also a popular place to go, containing over 220 species in 10 exhibits, ranging from the Tropical Forest to several African habitats, an Outback Trail, a Butterfly Landing, a Bird World, and an exhibit of tigers. In relation, the New England Aquarium in Boston is also a charming place of fun, including exhibits that host rare sea dragons, South American freshwater, tide pool creatures from the New England coast, a gallery comparing the New England marine to the Pacific Northwest marine, and a tropical gallery filled with colorful venomous fish and coral.
For a more religious side of Boston, there are plenty of sites to explore. Among the more well-known are the Cathedral of the Holy Cross with Gothic Revival architecture, as well as the rival church which led to the Cathedral of the Holy Cross’ incompletion, the Old South Church.
